Deb Cocks is a well recognised Australian Glass Artist specialising in reverse painted and engraved works which depict the environment around her. Her delightful, humurous, enchanting glass etched bowls and platters are exhibited in numerous collections and museums all throughout Australia and the world including the Victoria & Albert Museum and The National Gallery of Australia. "All my work draws on things around me. We live in the crater of an extinct volcano formation. Out the front door we see the Pinnacle Rock jutting from the caldera and out the back door Mt Warning, the volcano plug. The tip of this mountain is where the sun first finds Australia every morning. Apart from this inexhaustible natural panorama, life is the ordinary, simple things: garden, flowers, fruit, pots, potter partner, 13 year old daughter, dog, chooks and goose in the midst of horses, cattle, dairying and forests. All this interweaves with remembered little human vignettes, illuminated manuscripts, Books of Hours and increasingly with more troubling themes percolating from the workshop radio, and becomes the work. I like to combine all these elements in various ways, manipulating the images, having fun with the juxtapositions. Bits and pieces put together, sometimes real, sometimes fictitious. Sometimes the fiction becomes reality. Bit of a worry really." Each of Deb Cocks' bowls and platters are totally unique, going through two, three or more enamel firings after being slumped in a potters' kiln to achieve the desired shape. Deb hand etches to completely or partially remove the enamel leaving clear or textured areas. After the black enamel is fired on, coloured enamels are applied then the glass is refired. Usually the bowls are engraved as well, on top, bottom or both surfaces. All plates are named, dated and signed by Deb Cocks on the rim.
